What are loss memes?
Main Post:
I see them all over the place and I have no idea what they mean.
Top Comment: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cadbortion-loss-edits CADbortion (also known as Loss Edits) is a series of parodies based on an overly dramatic cartoon strip from the popular webcomic series Ctrl+Alt+Del in which the female lead suffers a miscarriage, which became a subject of widespread mockery among the readers. On June 2nd, 2008, Buckley posted a strip titled “ Loss ,” in which the female lead Lilah suffers a miscarriage. A significant change in tone from the usually comedic comic, the poorly-executed drama comic did not sit well with the anti-fans.
FAQ: Loss
Main Post:
I've noticed that there are a consistent stream of posts here from people not understanding the meme 'Loss' - this post is here to help this group, please read prior to posting in case this solves your confusion.
This is Loss:
It's a 2008 strip from the comic 'Ctrl+Alt+Delete' that was (and is) heavily memed on for its break from the usual comedic tone of the comic. Since its creation Loss has become an inside joke, often being simplified into its basic elements like this:
Here is an example of a meme featuring Loss more abstractly:
If you see a meme with this (or a variation of this) pattern as the punchline, the joke is simply a reference to Loss. If you're still confused about your meme, please by all means feel free to post, but I hope this helps a lot of you who didn't understand the reference!
Top Comment: we're really living in a time where people don't immediately recognize loss. i sound so old sayjng this but come on its one of the most iconic memes 😭 (also, those repetitive posts asking to explain the same joke that someone posted 3 hours before are annoying. literally just scroll down?)
Can somebody please explain "Loss" to me?
Main Post:
I genuinely don't get it. I see it everywhere and can't understand what makes it funny 😭
Top Comment: So the original Loss comic comes from a webcomic named Ctrl-Alt-Delete, which was a webcomic of the "two gamers on a couch variety" similar to Penny Arcade. It had two male lead characters who sat on a couch, played video games, and made jokes. Over time Ctrl-Alt-Delete became more serious and story-focused. One of the main characters got a girlfriend, the comic focused more on their relationship. Eventually the girlfriend became pregnant. Then one day the author uploads this comic. It is a wordless comic where the main character rushes to the hospital to find out that his girlfriend had a miscarriage. The comic wasn't intended to be funny. It was meant to be an earnest depiction of a couple losing a child. The serious nature of this comic contrasted sharply with the comic's history as a silly, immature, "two gamers on a couch" comic. The tonal whiplash of seeing a serious comic about miscarriage in a silly webcomic meant that the original comic didn't go over well. Eventually the comic, which was never intended to be funny, became a joke, and the joke became a meme. The rest is history.
What is the loss meme? (genuine)
Main Post:
I've seen the original, but I fail to find it funny? I see people always asking if "it's loss" but I feel like I'm missing something. Can someone explain it to me?
Top Comment: It’s an overly dramatic entry in an otherwise silly webcomic. People make fun of it for its mood whiplash and what TvTropes would call “ narm .” https://www.knowyourmeme.com/memes/loss
Why is ‘loss’ such a popular, controversial, and meme-d comic?
Main Post:
I’ve been seeing versions of this comic everywhere. I have seen the original, and had someone not told me what it was about I wouldn’t have guessed. Still, it seems to be a form of expression and grieving for the artist so I am curious - why is it such a big deal?
Top Comment: Ctrl + Alt + Del is a webcomic based on video games and video game culture. Out of nowhere and for little reason, the author made a comic about miscarriage, iirc because he went through a similar thing irl? But its so out of place. Imagine watching an episode of spongebob or something then all of a sudden theres a very serious episode where Sandy gets cancer and is slowly dying. "AYYY LEGO STAR WARS IS SO COOL" "WOAH HOT BABE PLAYING VIDEO GAMEZ" "the misery of the loss of my child rings through my soul like an echo of darkness that shall never see light" "HALO 3 IS KEWL!" Its so out of place and the humor derives from it mostly being a comedic 2000s kinda cringy in retrospect #gamer comic that suddenly has a serious comic then jumps back to gamer shit.,
Loss is now Official

Top Comment: Holy cow. I never read the original. I don’t know what I expected, but geez, I don’t know what to say. I’m at a loss for words.
Loss is unfunny as shit
Main Post:
Everytime I see a low quality Loss meme it just seems like people thinking its funny to understand some silly niche (its not niche everyone knows it) joke that you say to feel like ur in a club.
Its like a joke where it was funny at the start, but now the "joke" is only repeated bc OHH guys look I said the THING 😂😂? we all believe loss is funny right? lets all pat each other on the back now 😂
I also think rickrolls are unfunny and 2019 pewdiepie vs Tseries type stuff and Loss gives me the same vibe. Sorry for the pathetic rant but thats what this subreddit is for ig.
Edit: this post has an upvote rate of 56%, heh ik around half (44%) of you agree wt me 😏 even if u dont say
Top Comment: The joke that loss has become is finding new ways to display it in ways that might not be immediately noticeable. How abstracted can something get and still be recognizable
